My name is Thiasha Vythilingam, I am 26 years old and am from Johannesburg, South Africa. I work at Kartoza as a junior GIS specialist and have a BSc in Geography from the University of Pretoria. I am passionate about all things cartography and the the wondrous possibilities that it brings.
Studied at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, where I did my bachelours, honours and masters degrees in Geo-informatics. Been making use of Python to perform data analytics, and creating plugins for QGIS. Used to work at Stellenbosch University, and have been working at Kartoza for about 2 years.
My interest for software development started as soon as I had access to a computer. I decided to make from a hobby a job and studied programming. At the same time I started to use open source wherever possible, out of interest for the code as well as a fascination by the idea to collaborate and share.Because the world is not just bits and bytes and because investigating cultural as well as physical questions gives a lot of insights, studying Geography was just what I was looking for and combined with a minor in cartography offered even a creative part. All this time I continued to work in various IT and communication related jobs where I had the chance to complete my full stack ninja abilities in projects form embedded system to server environments. One day I heard about QGIS and it wasn't hard to realize that this was just the perfect combination of all my interest and skills: spatial problems, information technology and open source. After a couple of freelance projects I ended up founding OPENGIS.ch together with Marco Bernasocchi.I strive to enable everyone to use powerful, high quality tools for understanding the world with QGIS in the office and QField on the go.
Marco Bernasocchi is an open-source advocate, entrepreneur and full-stack geoninja. He is the creator of QField for QGIS, currently serves as QGIS.org Chair, and is an Open Source Geospatial Foundation board member. In his day job, Marco is the CEO of OPENGIS.ch, which he founded in 2011.A geographer by trade, Marco lives in a small Romansh-speaking mountain village in Switzerland, where he loves scrambling around the mountains to enjoy the feeling of freedom it gives him. Outgoing, flexible and open-minded, Marco fluently speaks five languages. The best thing is: He not only knows how to say it but also loves sharing his know-how.
I graduated from Skidmore College with a BA in Geology and German Language, and due to COVID decided to get my MS in Geology and Earth Science at the University of Iceland studying Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Events using remote sensing techniques. This is where I first made the switch from ArcGIS to QGIS and became obsessed with the software and it's capabilities. After graduating, I began working at Sevenson Environmental Services in New Jersey at a DuPont plant where they developed chemicals for the Manhattan Project, burying radioactive materials in the ground. Now we work to present data on the cleanup and remediation of this contamination.
Urban planner, computational designer with occasional teaching and moderation activities. Art will save the world, and I do my part through photography. Past @ Future Cities Lab, Singapore-ETH Centre. Speckle is open source digital infrastructure for anything designed in 3D. We handle interoperability between software silos, real time collaboration, data management, versioning and automation.
Seabilwe has an MSc in GIS and Remote Sensing from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has an Honours degree in Geography and a BSc in Geological Science, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Seabilwe is a Junior GIS specialist at Kartoza, passionate about the application of open-source software and open data to solve complex problems in the area of agroclimatology. And also explore various open-source software which can be used to map factors affecting crops on arable land. Her geological background made her wonder what tool can be used to make field data collection precise, effective and simple. After joining Kartoza, she discovered great mobile field data capture applications that have revolutionised how data is collected, analysed and viewed in the field, and cannot wait to explore more. Spreading knowledge is the main mandate. She enjoys training on open-source software such as QGIS, in particular for high school students and teachers. The teaching of practical GIS at the secondary level has helped her to realise that more sustainable methods of teaching GIS need to be implemented in all sectors of the educational sphere. She has taken up photography as her hobby, mostly taking shots of flowers. She enjoys baking, listening to music and watching animé or cartoons with her little sister.
